Our featured rider this month is Roy Jarmey from Australia. Known to his riding friends as "Old Skool". He's been on bikes since 79' and isn't stopping any time soon. Here's an interview he was kind enough to send in for his profile.
Your name and age: Roy Jamey ,38.
Where do you live? East coast of Australia.

How long have you been riding? Since 79', but in the last 10 years I have only had time to ride twice a week.

How did you get started in Bmx? I found an issue of Bicycle Motocross Action 79'. I was so excited by that one book that I started to convert my dragster into a bmx bike. I came from a small town and that must have been the only issue of Bicycle Motocross Action they had ever had. It took them just over 12 months before I could get another one.

Who was your favorite rider back then and who's your favorite now? Deny Davidow on Diamond Back, and I really thought alot of Buff, R.L and Haro. I knew more about the guys in the U.S.A than any Australian riders because of BMX Action and BMX Plus magazines. We had no Australian bmx books back then and I was isolated in a small town, so I didn't know any other riders, just me. My favorite riders now would be Ryan Guttler or Jim Rienstra. I met Gary Young not long ago and was impressed by his riding and personality. Top bloke.

When did you start racing? 82'

Ever sponsored? No...Gatorade gave me free Gatorade, stickers, and cloth patches as long as I passed out free Gatorade at the races.

How did you get into freestyle? I was always doing tricks at the races between moto's and the pros I was racing against weren't real friendly so I went to freestyle and riding became fun again, no rules, ride at your own pace and the only limit was your imagination.

When did you start riding freestyle? No racing ,just freestyle...86'.

Do you help the younger riders? Totally, I always have time for another rider. I am in a club called the B.B.S.A. and we hold the best comp in Australia. The comp is called Heavy Metal Hero's. The club also stopped the local government taking away the ramps from Beenleigh bmx park and now we get government funding to upgrade the park. It's awesome. Full details are at www.bbsai.org .

What is your favorite old school freestyle bike? I wanted a Haro or a Hutch. I had a Skyway Streetbeat, and I had a Dyno Slammer with a bash guard for a long time that I just couldn't break. I liked the GT Pro Performer too.

Anything you'd like to add? Yeah...keep riding people...it's a way of life.
